| 69'6" x 122" #2 Red Line UTCD Cars, Built 1987-1989, Aluminum Carbodies, Electrics by Westinghouse, No Overhauls, Seat 63. After almost two decades, these cars were introduced to replace the oldest members of the fleet (the 01400's), just as the Green Line Type 7's replaced the PCC's. Railfans might remember the 01400's as having a bar on the door that swiveled to unlock and lock positions when the doors opened and closed. | ||||

| 01872 | Ashmont | 8/29/01 | 9.24 | About 2/3 of the car had red "rough" seating covers, the other 1/3 in had black "smooth" seating covers. Plus, one window was had multiple cracks in it and was taped in green tape. Most transit vehicles feature shatter-resistance glass, designed to crack before it shatters. This is not only a safety feature in an accident, but could protect in unlawful circumstances. Passengers are protecting from shattering glass by rocks and other non-ammunition projectiles; the glass itself holds up against possible hits with projectiles or large blunt objects. In essence, shatter-resistance glass isn't too many step below bulletproof glass. |
